Why Study in Canada?

According to the Best countries to study abroad 2021 ranking, UK and USA are ranked in the top 2 positions but Canada successfully fledged its place just next to them. Canada took the 3rd spot, consecutively for the second year, and left behind countries like- Germany, France, Australia, and Switzerland- who occupied the next 4 spots in the list.

With this, the question must arise in the mind of parents and future overseas aspirants why and how Canada has become one of the best countries for higher education or has become the first choice to study abroad. So, what makes Canada one of the best study destinations in the world?

When we think about studying abroad, the choice is aplenty like- the USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, etc., but in the last few years, Canada consistently ranks as one of the best countries in the world to study and settle there and is also well-known for the quality of life that people enjoy being there.

No doubt! A decade ago, education abroad was considered to be meant for financially affluent families’ kids or was the big status symbol in society. But now the scenario has completely changed. Canada is successfully able to vanish such a mentality by opening gates for every kind of career aspirant (whether rich or from a middle-class family) by offering the affordable highest quality of education along with various settlement options. Canada offers the best of the best universities, for those who wish to get into the world’s top universities, and the best community colleges in the world, for those who look for shorter course options and also want to save on their living expenses.

In my view, its education quality, global acceptance, relaxing education system, and study environment in colleges/universities, etc. have made it an alluring option among international students. Moreover, the Canadian Government takes multiple steps, frequently, to help students to remain in-country both during their education and even after completing their education.

Being in Canada will give you access to four beautiful seasons, wide Open Spaces, abundant wildlife, multicultural diversity, a clean environment, incredible quality of life, a warm welcoming community, promising career with an internationally recognized education from the top 10 universities (among the top 250 worldwide universities) of the world.

In this blog, I am trying to list the reasons why to study in Canada or the benefits of studying in Canada. Although it’s a bit tough, as the reasons are innumerable but to enlighten student’s understanding while making choices, I am narrowing down my knowledge and research to the following important facts, which I feel that every parent must understand and must look for before finalizing their study destination:

  • Academic excellence

Canada’s education quality makes it stand out and shine among other study destination countries. Canadian Universities and colleges provide the world’s best education and get ranked in the QS World’s University Ranking and the World University Ranking 2019. These rankings assure that the quality of Canadian education is consequently very high throughout Canada- irrespective of the province, type of institution, or level of education you choose to study here. All sorts of programs, for various streams, are also available in Canada. So, you have a wide range of course options to choose from, whichever stream you belong to-be engineering, IT, Healthcare, Agriculture, Management, Accounting, Sports, Mining, economics, Political science, Petroleum, or any other stream, you will certainly find the best option for yourself in Canada.

  • High quality of Education adds value Globally.

A high standard of education and rigorous controls over its quality, throughout Canada, assures that Canadian education will just not get valued globally but will also open doors for your future and will be beneficial for your career. Education obtained from any college/university in Canada is globally recognized, accepted, and is considered at an equal level as education from The, USA, or UK, or other commonwealth countries.

Educators are highly trained and bring diverse perspectives to the classroom. At the university level, two out of every five academics hold at least one International degree. Universities like- The University of Torontothe University of British ColumbiaMcGill University, and McMaster University are also able to grab a place among the top 100 universities rankings, ranked in the list of The Times Education World University Rankings.

  • Affordable country to live and study

Canada is considered the most cost-effective country to study and settle in. The tuition fees of its colleges or universities are quite cheaper in comparison to other popular study destinations, like the UK, Australia, New Zealand, etc. I believe in getting parents a full return on investment, in the form of finances as well as a child’s career.

Thus, Canada has the potential to provide wonderful work opportunities whether full-time or part-time. Moreover, some Canadian colleges even provide co-op course options to career aspirants. Such courses let students not only gain theoretical knowledge but also experience a real-world professional environment.

Note, that tuition fees may vary as per the program students choose and the province.

Many universities also provide scholarships to qualified students and help in cutting down the educational expenses of parents, where average tuition fees sum up to around CAN $28,000 (for undergraduate courses) or CAN $18,000 (for post-graduate courses, which can vary from program to program). The cost of studying MBA there is quite high, CAN $31,000.

Living expenses are also fixed and can be estimated at around $10,200 per annum per student. And include expenses like House rent, Public Transportation, Food expenses, Books and study material-related expenses, etc.

  • Funding and Support to career-oriented student scholarships

As told above, many colleges and universities in Canada offer scholarship options to career-oriented and qualified students. Canadian educational institutes provide both full and partial scholarship opportunities to international students.

I am listing below some of the International Undergraduate and Graduate scholarship options in Canada:

  1. York University International student scholarship program

  2. University of British Columbia Scholarships for International students.

  3. Carleton Prestige Scholarships

  4. Calgary International Entrance Scholarships

  5. Humber College International Entrance Scholarships

  6. University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships

  7. University of Waterloo Master’s Award of Excellence

  8. University of Calgary Graduate Awards, etc.

Scholarships are available for international students to study or do research in Canada. Endless work opportunities part-time especially those that let them work for 20 hours per week, also support students in meeting their educational or living expenses. The wage rate comes to around CAN $10 per hour (may vary as per job).

Stay Back and settlement options- earn while you earn, pgwp and PR

PGWP opportunity for international students helps them to stay back within Canada after completion of their graduation and Canadian PR, later, lets them settle there successfully. Canada’s unique concept of ‘earn while you learn allows students to work part-time for about 20 hours per week on campus or outside. Various co-op programs also help students to get not only real-world exposure but also to earn even before they complete their education and start looking for job opportunities on getting their post-study work visa. They can also apply for up to 3 years of post-study work permit, depending on the program duration, that enables them to remain and work in Canada. Students need to meet eligibility criteria to get PR success, like:

1. Duration of course or length, of course, needs to be at more than 8 months, at least.

2. Students need to get the graduation done either from a public post-study institution or a private post-secondary institution.

3. You need to apply for a work visa for at least within 3-months

4. Do you even know that only a student visa holder can apply for PSWV and can get a work visa? No other kind of visa holder can get a work visa.

Students need to understand an important thing, they cannot get a work permit for more than their course duration. A minimum of 2 years of study duration can get you a maximum 3 years work visa, even if you are doing a 4-years degree program. The Canadian government has provided such great opportunities to international students as it feels that they can gain capabilities to become future Canadians, as they get ample time to understand Canada, embrace Canadian culture, and have explored the Canadian work environment as well. Every year IRCC approves lacs of PR applications, out of which more than 30% are Indian students.   This all re-emphasizes the fact why international students or more specifically Indian students must choose Canada as their next study destination.
